There seems to be some discrepancy over the origin of Richmond’s name – there are conflicting accounts that state the name originates from Ontario, England and Australia. Either way, Richmond is now British Columbia’s fourth most populous city and is one of Canada’s main portals to and from the rest of the world. Richmond is actually made up of a series of 17 islands, separated by estuaries that feed into the Fraser River. The largest island, Lulu Island, at the mouth of the Fraser River is the most populated and urbanized. Richmond is not just a bustling city; it also includes the quieter, quaint and historical fishing village of Steveston, as well as natural wetlands, farms and large parks.

As Richmond occupies a river delta it is blessed with plenty of rich, alluvial soil. What was once an abundant natural habitat for wildlife, gave way in the 19^th century to agricultural land. Over the years, particularly in more recent times, although some still remain, vast areas of Richmond have now transformed into residential, commercial and industrial areas. Like its neighbouring cities, this expansion is in response to a burgeoning human population.
